Embracing Change: a Reflection on Goals and Growth
As a qualitative researcher, my days are spent delving into the rich tapestry of human experience, in all its complexity and messiness. I have the privilege of hearing all different perspectives on the ways people navigate their lives, their challenges, and their aspirations - and I’m very often inspired to think about my own life differently. As we make the transition from summer to fall, I find this time of year particularly compelling. It’s a moment ripe for reflection and a chance to clear the canvas and start anew, setting the stage for new goals and dreams.
Remember the exhilarating feeling of going back to school as a child? The smell of freshly sharpened pencils, the anticipation of seeing friends, and the thrill of new opportunities ahead — all these sensations create a powerful backdrop to a significant time in our lives. For many of us, the feelings associated with back-to-school are strongly positive or negative - either we relished the new beginnings or felt the weight of anxiety about what lay ahead.
Research indicates that we tend to recall memories that are either exceptionally positive or negative with greater vividness than those that are neutral. This bias in memory recall means that significant moments, such as the start of a new school year, are etched into our minds more clearly, shaping our perceptions and expectations for our lives.
In the spirit of positive psychology, the study of what makes life worth living, I’ve been reflecting on my time at the University of Pennsylvania, where I had the honor of studying under Martin Seligman, the founder of this field. Positive psychology emphasizes the importance of focusing on strengths, resilience, and the conditions that foster success. As we stand on the brink of a new season, I encourage you to think about what went well for you over the past year. What were the moments that filled you with joy and fulfillment? And how did you get there - can you retrace your steps?
Now is the perfect time to recreate those conditions that led to your successes. Maybe it was a supportive community, a particular environment, or a specific mindset that propelled you forward. Identifying these elements can illuminate the path ahead, helping you set goals that are not only ambitious but also grounded in your personal experiences.
As fall kicks off, let’s harness the energy of this transformative period. Think about your aspirations for the coming year and take actionable steps towards making them a reality. Whether it’s returning to a passion, embarking on a new career path, or dedicating more time to self-care, each goal represents an opportunity to paint your own life’s canvas.
Remember - the power of optimism lies in our ability to envision the future we desire. Embrace this season of change with open hearts and minds, and be ready to explore the possibilities that await. I wish you every success as you go out there and make those dreams happen!
